Scouting is sourcing

There is a version of scouting that never gets written down: a text from a former teammate, a manager's read on a room, a scout's fifteen minutes in a rink in Brno. It doesn't show up in the box score, and it isn't wrong to trust it.

The version that does get written down — expected goals, save percentage above expected, streaming velocity, ticket draw — is table stakes now. Every front office has it. Every label has a dashboard. The stats stopped being the edge around the time everyone bought the same subscription.

What's still artisanal is the acquisition decision itself: the draft pick, the trade, the signing, the booking. Multi-party, constrained, adversarial, made under a clock. A GM has a cap sheet and a war room. An A&R has a recoupment waterfall and a release calendar. Different vocabularies, same shape: a rules engine, a valuation under uncertainty, and a bet on someone else's private information.

We're building the primitives for that decision, not another leaderboard. Surplus as a distribution, not a point estimate — because the risk is the point. Caps, CBAs, and recoupment terms as executable rules, not tribal knowledge held by one capologist. A graph of who actually knows whom, because hidden talent moves through relationships before it moves through a spreadsheet. A recommendation that ships with its assumptions attached, because the job is to earn the conversation, not win the argument.

None of this replaces the room. It just means the room walks in with a receipt instead of a hunch.
